Efficacy of eleven essential oils, citronella (Cymbopogon nardus Rendle.) Kaffir lime (Citrus
hystrix DC.) ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) litsea (Litsea
cubeba (Lour.) Pers.) clove (Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb.) lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.)
Stapf.) sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) curcumin (Curcuma longa Linn.) peppermint (Mentha
piperita) และ makhwan (Zanthoxylum limonella Alston), against ectoparasite in animals. The results
revealed the in vitro activity of 11 essential oils can kill ectoparasites but the efficiency and the intensity
were varied used. In chickens, citronella essential oil and ginger at a ratio of 50:50 were found to be
effective in eliminating ticks and mites similar to insecticides. In cattle, essential oils from lemongrass
and ginger at 8% were effective in inhibiting the laying of tick eggs, death of the tick larva and the best
reduction of the number of ticks on the cows, which is close to the use of insecticides. Additionally,
16% of makhwan oil and clove oil revealed the most effective in inhibiting the laying of tick eggs,
increase the death of tick larvae, increase the death of flea and were most satisfied with the application
on the animal’s skin with no adverse effects and allergies. Finally, essential oils can be safely used to
prevent and eliminate ectoparasites and can be applied in organic livestock production.
