One of the waste management from longan processing approached zero waster is to use
longan seed as animal feeds replacing carbohydrate sources which are more expensive.
However, longan seed coat is an anti-animal growth substance which is needed to be removed.
The prototype of a longan seed coat separator developed consisted of seed feeder, separating unit,
power transmission, 2 hp moter and machine structure. The operation of this separator started
from feeding longan seeds into hopper, then longan seed will be conveyed to separation unit, in
which the seed coat will be removed by the rotation of the separation shaft against fixed screen.
The kernel will be separated from the seed coat and then transported out on the front of the
machine.
The results of the effect of the preparation methods of longan seeds before seed coat
separation showed that if using frozen longan seeds, longan seeds must be prepared by boiling
longan seeds at 100 ?C for 6 minutes and followed by drying under the sun dry for 4 days. If
using fresh longan seeds, it must be prepared by drying under the sun dry for 4 days or under hotair
oven at 65 ?C for 24 hours.
Effect of separation speeds at 550, 700, 850, 1,000 and 1,150 rpm on separation
performance showed that the machine performed best was 1,000 rpm, resulted the capacity of
approximately 110 kg.hr-1, percentages of separation efficiency approximately 90%. The long
run of this separator done at 1,000 rpm showed the capacity was 94 kg.hr-1, while the percentages
of separation efficiency was unchangeable. The study of the use of dried longan kernel as a broiler food showed that the final weights
of the broilers of the group that were fed with 5 percent longan seed kernel can be used to replace
corn by increasing the farming period from generally 5 weeks to 6 weeks; since the market
demand weight of broiler is 1.24 kg which was lower than that of the control group. The groups
that consumed the kernel of longan seeds had the feed intake, body weight gain and feed
conversion ratio were lower than the control group and decreased as the amount of kernel of the
longan seeds increased. In addition, the carcass composition in all aspects of the longan kernel
flesh group was lower than the control group. Except for the weights of the wings, breast,
skeleton, heart and spleen, there were no statistical differences with the control group. The
gizzard and proventriculus, intestinal and visceral organs suggested that all levels of longan
kernel flesh were higher than the control group.
