This research aims to study the influence of agricultural waste from maize on vulcanized
natural rubber (NR). Types of agricultural waste maize such as stalk, husk and cob were studied.
The effects of corncob content on properties of NR vulcanizates were also investigated. It was
found that the vulcanizates filled with corncobs had higher tensile strength, elongation at break,
elastic behavior, swelling resistance and abrasion resistance than the others. The influence of
amount of corncobs on properties of rubber vulcanizates revealed that cure characteristics in terms
of minimum and maximum torques, as well as torque difference increased with loading levels of
corncob, whereas the scorch time and cure time decreased. Mechanical properties of NR
vulcanizates in terms of hardness, 100% modulus, compression set and water uptake increased as
amount of corncob. In addition, the vulcanizate with 20 phr corncob gave the better filler dispersion
and also exhibited the best properties in tensile strength, elongation at break and abrasion resistance,
which had 7.4 MPa, 338 % and 130.03 mm3, respectively.
