Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously granted an audience to Associate Professor Dr. Weerapon Thongma, President of Maejo University, along with the university’s executives, faculty members, and rice breeding researchers. On this occasion, Maejo University respectfully presented 5,000 kilograms of “Khao Niew Hom Kor Khor-Maejo 2” glutinous rice seeds, 5,000 kilograms of “Hom Maejo 90 Pi” glutinous rice seeds, and 1,000 kilograms of “Hom Maejo 90 Pi” milled glutinous rice. The presentation was made in honor of Her Royal Highness’s birthday on April 2, 2025, to support activities under the Royal Project for the Development of Children and Youth in Remote Areas. The ceremony took place at Sa Pathum Palace, Bangkok, on April 30, 2025.

The “Khao Niew Hom Kor Khor-Maejo 2” is a fragrant glutinous rice variety with a light aroma and long slender grains. It has been bred to be short-statured and photoperiod-insensitive, making it suitable for both main and off-season rice cultivation. It yields high productivity and received the Outstanding Research Award in 2012 from the National Research Council of Thailand. The variety was officially certified by the Rice Department on April 8, 2015.

The “Hom Maejo 90 Pi” glutinous rice variety was bred for a short plant height, resistance to lodging, and photoperiod insensitivity. It is also suitable for both main and off-season cultivation. The rice is soft, sticky, and aromatic. It was officially registered as a new plant variety by the Department of Agriculture on November 4, 2021, and received the Gold Award at the Thailand Research Expo 2023.
